Cloud InfrastructureThin moat
Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet
Oracle's infrastructure cloud more than doubles every year, and whether it earns its cost of capital is the whole question behind the company's borrowing.
Cloud infrastructure is Oracle's fastest-growing line and, since this year, its most important one for the future. Revenue was $18,101 million in fiscal 2026, about 27% of the total12, and $7,388 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 121% and about 38% of the quarter34.
What is inside is Oracle Cloud Infrastructure: computing, storage and networking sold as a service5, including the large GPU clusters on which companies train and run artificial intelligence models. It also includes database services run in Oracle's cloud and, increasingly, in the datacenters Oracle builds inside other clouds6.
The history is short. Under older reporting, platform and infrastructure cloud revenue was $617 million in fiscal 20157. The line reported today was $6,840 million in fiscal 2024 and $10,234 million in fiscal 20258. Growth rose every quarter through fiscal 2026, from 55% to 93%9, and Oracle says cloud infrastructure contributed 84% of the growth in cloud revenue that year10.
It is paid for in two ways. Smaller customers pay for what they consume. The largest customers sign multi-year contracts for reserved capacity, which is why remaining performance obligations reached $664 billion11; some of them prepay for the equipment or supply their own GPUs, portions that totalled $75 billion by June 202612.
Profitability is not disclosed for this line alone. It sits in the cloud and software segment, whose margin fell from about 64.1% in fiscal 2024 to about 54.5% in the latest quarter as infrastructure grew13. Oracle has said AI infrastructure earns an adjusted gross margin of 30% to 40%14. The line also carries the depreciation of the capacity it rents out, which was $3,156 million company-wide in the latest quarter15.
The outlook is set by Oracle's own plan: $32 billion in fiscal 2027, $73 billion in fiscal 2028, and $144 billion in fiscal 203016. Oracle guides cloud revenue growth of 65% to 71% in the second quarter of fiscal 202717. Supply of power, buildings and chips, rather than demand, is what the company says sets the pace18.
The capacity behind the line is being paid for partly by the customers who use it. In the latest quarter Oracle recorded $11,363 million of customer prepayments with a significant financing component19, and said the more than $30 billion of contracts booked in the quarter had no incremental impact on its plans to raise capital20. Oracle also discloses the capacity it delivers: more than 300,000 GPUs since the end of the fourth quarter of fiscal 202621.
Where the line is headed is visible in the backlog's timing. Oracle expects to recognise about 13% of its $664 billion of remaining performance obligations in the next twelve months and 37% in the following two years22, and most of that backlog is cloud infrastructure. On those proportions the line has roughly $86 billion of contracted revenue due within a year23, far more than its current annual rate.
This line will decide whether Oracle's borrowing was wise. The verdict would change if its growth fell well below the plan while capital spending stayed near $28 billion a quarter, because that would mean the capacity is arriving faster than paying customers.
+121% in Q1 FY2027; plan $32bn for FY2027.
The engine of the plan; growth falling well below the published path would mean capacity or customers are late.
