The Database AnnuityWide moat
Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet
Oracle's support fees have not grown in five years and have not shrunk either, which is what a customer base that cannot leave looks like.
Oracle's moat is the database, and the evidence is a number that refuses to change. Software support, the yearly fee for updates and help on software customers already own, was $19,365 million in fiscal 2022 and $19,804 million in fiscal 202612. In a company whose revenue grew about 59% over the same period3, that flat line is the moat in its purest form: the base is barely growing, and it is not shrinking either.
Customers stay because leaving is dangerous. A database holds a company's most important records, and the applications written around it assume its behaviour. Moving means rewriting and retesting everything that touches it. Oracle adds to that cost by selling the engineered hardware, the middleware and the applications that sit on top, so a customer often has several reasons not to move at once.
The economics are excellent. The cloud and software segment, which includes support, earned $34,468 million on $58,530 million in fiscal 20264, and the hardware segment, mostly systems built to run the database, earned about 65%5. Oracle spends heavily to keep it that way: $10,272 million of research in fiscal 20266.
Two things limit it. New licences, which later become support contracts, are shrinking: $4,737 million in fiscal 2026, about 8.9% lower78. And Oracle's own strategy now lets customers run its database in rivals' clouds, which its annual report says "could lead our customers to migrate away"9.
The annuity also shows in the old ecosystem reporting. Oracle's infrastructure revenue, which then combined cloud infrastructure with database and middleware support, was $17,562 million in fiscal 2022 and $24,646 million in fiscal 20251011. Most of that increase was the new cloud; the support inside it hardly moved. That is the pattern of the whole company in miniature: a flat, durable base with a fast-growing business built on top of it.
The annuity is also what makes Oracle's dividend credible. Oracle paid $5,787 million of dividends in fiscal 202612, about 29% of support revenue that year13, and has raised its dividend for 12 years14. As long as support holds near $20 billion, the dividend is covered by the old business alone, whatever the cloud costs.
The annuity is a wide moat that is not growing. What would falsify it is support revenue falling by several percent a year; it was $4,895 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, down about 1.2%1516, and that is the number to follow.
Support flat at about $19.8bn; licences falling.
The old business in one line; a decline faster than a few percent a year would mean the installed base is leaving.
