Oracle (ORCL) — threat to the moat

Oracle's applications grow about ten percent a year, AI or no AI, which says the suites keep customers more than they win them.

Cloud applications revenue has grown at about the same pace for three years. It was $12,934 million in fiscal 2024, $14,272 million in fiscal 2025 and $15,888 million in fiscal 20261, growth of about 10.3% and 11.3%2. The first quarter of fiscal 2027 brought $4,219 million, up 10%3.

A straight line at about 10%.

Ten percent a year is a respectable number for a large software business. The trouble is what it implies about the moat. The applications are the part of Oracle whose customers are hardest to lose, and they are not accelerating even as the company describes artificial intelligence as a reason to buy them. Oracle's co-chief executive said AI code generation was making its SaaS suites "more competitive and more profitable"4; the growth rate has not yet shown it.

The quarterly figures are almost a straight line: $3,839 million, $3,898 million, $4,026 million and $4,126 million through fiscal 20265.

A steady ten percent is not a threat to the existing base. It becomes one if it slows: two consecutive quarters below 8% would say the suites have stopped taking new customers from SAP, Salesforce and Workday, and are living on the ones they have.
