⚠ Hardware Revenue Is a Quarter Below 2017Low threat
Oracle (ORCL) — threat to the moat
Oracle's hardware sales are a quarter below 2017, and each machine not replaced is one less thing tying a customer to its database.
The hardware line has been shrinking for a decade. Revenue was $4,152 million in fiscal 20171, $3,183 million in fiscal 20222 and $3,084 million in fiscal 20263. The first quarter of fiscal 2027 was better, $774 million, up 15%4.
A declining product line can still be profitable, and this one is. The risk is to the moat rather than to the income statement. Engineered systems are one of the things that make an Oracle database hard to move. When customers stop replacing them and move the database to a cloud instead, including Oracle's own, that anchor disappears.
Oracle's answer is to put the same systems in other people's clouds: its multicloud database runs on its hardware inside the datacenters of Amazon, Microsoft and Google5. That keeps the database on Oracle's machines, but in someone else's building.
Under Oracle's older reporting the decline is longer still. Hardware revenue was $5,205 million in fiscal 20156, so the line has lost about two-fifths of its revenue in eleven years7. The segment margin has risen through that period, which is what a business harvesting its installed base looks like.
The quarter's growth may be the start of that shift or a single good order. If hardware revenue returns to decline in fiscal 2027 while multicloud database revenue keeps growing, the lock-in has moved from the customer's datacenter to the hyperscaler's.
