⚠ Prepayments Flatter the Cash FlowModerate threat
Oracle (ORCL) — threat to the moat
Half of Oracle's latest operating cash flow was customers paying early, which lowers today's borrowing and tomorrow's receipts.
Oracle's operating cash flow jumped 184% in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, to $23,103 million from $8,140 million1. Of that, $11,363 million was the increase in deferred revenues from customer prepayments with a significant financing component2.
Take the prepayments out and the picture is ordinary. Operating cash flow excluding them was about $11,740 million, and free cash flow would have been about minus $16,759 million rather than minus $5,396 million3. Oracle's own measure of net cash outlay for capital expenditures, which subtracts the prepayments, was $17,966 million in the quarter4.
Prepayments are real money, but they are money for services not yet delivered. They reduce the cash Oracle needs to borrow now and reduce the cash it will receive when the services are provided. Their financing component means part of them behaves like a loan from the customer.
This does not hide anything; Oracle discloses the figure plainly. The risk is for a reader who takes the headline operating cash flow as a sign the business has turned. The measure that matters is operating cash flow excluding prepayments; if it does not grow faster than capital spending, the cash deficit is only being moved forward in time.
