Epic and the Hospital RivalsThin moat
Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet
In hospital records Oracle is the challenger with a bought franchise, trying to take customers from rivals whose moats work just like its own.
In hospital software Oracle is not the incumbent defending a base; it is the buyer of a business competing against established rivals. Its annual report lists Allscripts, Arcadia, athenahealth, Epic and InterSystems as its healthcare competitors1. Oracle entered the market by acquiring Cerner in June 2022 for a total purchase price of $28.2 billion2.
The contest is fought one hospital system at a time, and decisions last for many years. A record system is chosen after long evaluation, installed at great cost and replaced rarely. That protects Oracle's existing Cerner customers, and it protects its rivals' customers from Oracle in exactly the same way.
Oracle's plan is to win on new technology. It said in June 2026 that a new AI patient care management system would push the growth rate of Oracle Health "to double-digits in fiscal year 2027"3. Management went further, saying it believes AI is about to completely revolutionise healthcare4.
The financial evidence is limited because Oracle Health revenue is no longer reported separately. Cerner contributed $5.9 billion in fiscal 20235. Services revenue, which includes Cerner's consulting work, was $1,414 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 5%6.
Oracle also counts its health business as a platform for new ideas. Management said in June 2026 that it believes AI is about to completely revolutionise healthcare, and that improvements in patient care are expected to yield much better outcomes7. Those are claims about the future of medicine; the measurable claim is Oracle Health's growth rate in fiscal 2027.
This is the one competitive contest in which Oracle must take customers from an entrenched rival rather than keep its own. The test is the promise management has made: double-digit Oracle Health growth in fiscal 2027. Growth that stays in single digits would say the hospitals are staying where they are.
Oracle Health targeted to reach double-digit growth in FY2027.
Includes the consulting that installs Oracle Health; a decline would mean fewer new hospital projects.
