⚠ Interest Expense Up 55% in a QuarterModerate threat

Oracle (ORCL) — threat to the moat

Oracle's interest bill rose 55% in a year, and the business has so far grown fast enough to carry it.

Borrowing is cheap until the interest bill comes. Oracle's interest expense was $1,428 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, against $923 million a year earlier1, an increase of about 55%2. For the full fiscal 2026 it was $4,599 million, against $3,578 million the year before3.

A quarter now costs almost a third of a year.

The new debt is also more expensive. The September 2025 notes ran to 2065 at a coupon of 6.100% on the longest tranche4, and S&P cut Oracle's rating to BBB- in July 20265, which the aspect page covers.

Interest now takes a real share of profit. It was about 21% of operating income in the latest quarter6. Operating income itself rose 57%7, which is why the share is still manageable.

The debt already raised will keep the interest bill rising for years. Oracle's notes include tranches maturing as late as 20658, and it says it does not expect to issue additional debt in calendar 20269. The next borrowing, when it comes, will be priced at whatever the market charges a BBB- issuer.

The danger is a year in which the two move in opposite directions. If cloud margins keep falling while the debt keeps growing, interest could take a third or more of operating income. The line to watch is interest expense for fiscal 2027; a figure above $7 billion without operating income above $30 billion would say the borrowing is outrunning the business.
