The Applications SuitesNarrow moat

Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet

Oracle's applications grow about ten percent a year on top of a database customers already cannot move, which makes a deep moat deeper, not wider.

Oracle's second layer of protection is the software that runs on its database. Fusion and NetSuite run accounts and supply chains, the industry suites run banks and utilities, and since 2022 Oracle Health runs hospital records. Cloud applications revenue was $15,888 million in fiscal 20261, and in the older ecosystem reporting, applications revenue including support was $19,383 million in fiscal 20252.

Cloud applications revenue ($M)12,934FY202414,272FY202515,888FY2026Oracle Form 10-K FY2026
About 10-11% a year.

The switching costs here are organisational. A payroll or ledger system is wired into a company's processes and audits; a hospital record system into its clinical work. Oracle bought the hardest of these to move, paying $28.2 billion for Cerner3.

The business is steady rather than fast. Cloud applications grew about 10.3% in fiscal 2025 and 11.3% in fiscal 20264, and 10% in the first quarter of fiscal 20275. It is also being run more cheaply: sales and marketing fell to about 12.4% of revenue6 and headcount fell by about 21,000 in fiscal 202678.

What limits this facet is competition that is already inside the customer. Oracle's annual report names SAP, Salesforce and Workday among its competitors9, and a customer can run one supplier's applications on another's database.

Oracle's workforce figures show where the applications effort sits. About 34,000 employees work in services and about 26,000 in cloud and software operations10, much of it supporting customers on the suites. Revenue per employee across the company was about $509,05011. The cuts of fiscal 2026 removed about 21,000 people1213, and the suites kept growing through them, which supports Oracle's claim that it can serve the base with fewer people.

The applications also carry legal risks the database does not. Oracle's annual report describes a privacy class action in the Netherlands and other litigation14, and Oracle paid a large judgment to Hewlett-Packard after a jury awarded $3.0 billion in damages15, part of $4.7 billion of litigation-related charges in fiscal 202216. None of these threatens the suites; they show the cost of being everywhere in enterprise software.

The applications widen the database moat into a narrow one of their own. What would falsify it is cloud applications growth falling below the mid single digits; at 10% in the latest quarter17, the suites are keeping pace.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

SaaS growing about 10%; Oracle Health targeted to reach double digits.
