GEV — overall economic moat

Investment snapshot
Narrow moat↗ WideningConfidenceMediumValuationExpensive
Strongest advantageThe installed base: about 7,000 gas turbines and a fleet generating about a quarter of world electricity; services 71% of 2025 gross profit and $86bn of contracted services backlog
Greatest threatThe shortage ending: pricing, deposits and a 46x forward multiple all rest on a turbine and grid queue that GE Vernova and its rivals are adding capacity to shorten; Wind still losing
Key metricAdjusted EBITDA margin (11.3% in Q2 2026; 12-14% guided for 2026; 20% targeted for 2028)
Verdict: GE Vernova owns one of the great installed bases in industry, and a shortage of gas turbines and grid equipment has let it stop selling machines at a loss and collect billions in advance. The gas-service core is a wide moat; the queue on top of it is real but temporary, and Wind is still losing money. At about 46 times forward earnings the shares assume the shortage lasts through the 2028 plan. The verdict turns on the margin: from 8.4% in 2025 to the promised 20% in 2028, with 11.3% in the latest quarter.

GE Vernova makes the machines that generate and move electricity, and then maintains them for decades. It was spun off from General Electric on 2 April 20241, is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts2, and employs about 75,000 people, about 70% of them in manufacturing, engineering or services3. Its installed base, it says, generates about a quarter of the world's electricity4.

Flat as a GE division, growing since the spin.

Revenue was $38,068 million in 20255. By segment, Power, mostly gas turbines and their service, produced $19,767 million; Electrification, the grid business, $9,642 million; and Wind $9,110 million6. Services were $17,134 million and equipment $20,934 million7.

How it makes money is the installed base. Services earned a 31.3% gross margin in 2025 against 10.4% for equipment8, so 71.1% of gross profit came from services9. For years equipment was sold below cost: in 2022 the equipment gross margin was minus 7.3%10. What changed is the queue. With gas turbines sold out, GE Vernova holds 53 gigawatts of gas turbine backlog and 63 gigawatts of slot reservations11, and customers have prepaid $39,944 million12.

The results show it. Operating income went from minus $923 million in 2023 to $1,388 million in 202513; net income attributable was $4,884 million, including a $2.9 billion tax benefit14. Free cash flow was $3.7 billion in 202515 and $9,897 million in the first half of 202616. The company has net cash17, pays a $0.50 quarterly dividend18 and buys back stock.

Two things hold it back. Wind has lost $3,753 million of segment EBITDA in five years19, and the history before April 2024 is a GE division's carve-out20, not an independent company's record.

At $957.63 on 25 September 2026 the company was worth $255.05 billion21, 27.41 times trailing earnings and 45.68 times forward22.

No shareholder controls the company. The largest holders in the 2026 proxy were FMR with 8.7%, Vanguard with 8.7% and BlackRock with 6.5%23, and there is one class of stock. Scott Strazik is chief executive24; the chief financial officer, Kenneth Parks, will hand over to Claire McDonough on 1 January 202725. The business also carries the history of GE's 2015 purchase of Alstom's power and grid businesses, which the information statement says were the subject of significant cases involving alleged anti-competitive conduct or improper payments26.

The spin-off is recent, and the numbers before it are not a record of this company. The 2021 to 2023 figures are the audited carve-out statements of GE businesses in the Form 10 information statement27, prepared before GE Vernova had its own board, balance sheet or capital allocation. The first full year as an independent company was 2025, and the first annual report the company filed covered 202428.

The moat is narrow and widening: wide in gas services, temporary in the turbine and grid shortage, absent in wind. The number that would falsify the verdict is the adjusted EBITDA margin, 11.3% in the second quarter of 202629; if 2026 ends below the 12% floor of guidance, the queue will not have become the profit the price assumes.

Revenue, and where it comes from
$38.1bn in 2025: Power $19.8bn, Electrification $9.6bn, Wind $9.1bn (less $0.5bn eliminations); services 45%

Two-thirds of Power revenue is service; watch Power's EBITDA margin, 18.8% in Q2 2026, as the test of the queue.

Overall durability6/10

Switching costs are high on the installed base: a plant owner depends on the original maker's parts, engineering and long-term service agreements for decades. Network effects are weak. Pricing power has appeared with the turbine shortage, taking equipment from a loss to a 10% margin, but it depends on the queue. Hard to replicate: heavy-duty gas turbines are made by very few companies and a fleet of 7,000 cannot be built quickly. Disruption resistance is middling: fuel cells, engines, storage and policy all compete for the same demand, and wind shows the base does not protect every product. Durability sits in the upper half of the narrow band.
