⚠ Selling the Software Shortens the Recurring RevenueLow threat
GE Vernova (GEV) — threat to the moat
GE Vernova sold its Proficy software business for $0.6 billion, leaving the grid segment more dependent on one-off equipment sales.
GE Vernova sold part of the Electrification segment's recurring revenue in 2026. The Proficy software business went to TPG for $0.6 billion1. Electrification Software revenue was $973 million in 20252, and software is the part of a grid business most like a subscription.
The sale made sense for a company focused on hardware in a shortage, and it brought in cash. But it leaves Electrification more dependent on equipment sales, which were $7,378 million in 2025 against $2,263 million of services3.
The rest of the grid services base is small relative to gas. The Electrification services line is about 23% of segment revenue45, against two thirds in Power.
Software had grown slowly in any case: Electrification Software revenue was $876 million in 2021 and $973 million in 202567. It was the smallest of the segment's units and the least connected to the grid shortage, which may explain why it was the one sold.
The services line will show whether the segment builds an annuity. If Electrification services revenue stays near $2.3 billion as equipment sales double, the grid business will remain a cyclical equipment maker.
