✦ Nuclear: A Small Unit Growing FastThin moat
GE Vernova (GEV) — the future bets
GE Vernova's nuclear unit grew 46% in three years but is still under a tenth of its Power segment.
Nuclear is a small part of GE Vernova with a large story attached. Nuclear Power revenue was $699 million in 2022 and $1,018 million in 202512, up 45.6%3, against $19,767 million for the whole Power segment4. The unit designs boiling-water reactors and supplies fuel, and designs and develops small modular reactors through joint ventures with Hitachi, Ltd.5.
The unit has been reshaped. In 2024 GE Vernova sold part of the Steam Power nuclear activities to EDF for a pre-tax gain of $1.0 billion6, and from January 2026 the rest of Steam Power was folded into Nuclear, Hydro and Gas Power7. On that new basis Nuclear revenue was $817 million in the second quarter of 2026, against $649 million a year earlier8, and $1,575 million in the first half against $1,310 million9.
The competitors here are different from gas. The 10-K names Westinghouse, Framatome and Rolls-Royce among its Power rivals10, all of them nuclear suppliers.
The bet is that nuclear becomes a second engine of Power growth. For now it is under a tenth of the segment.
The EDF transaction was a reminder that the company prunes as well as grows in nuclear. The $1.0 billion pre-tax gain in the second quarter of 202411 came from selling a portion of Steam Power's nuclear activities, and it flattered 2024 net income of $1,552 million12.
The new business-unit reporting will settle it. A quarterly revenue that falls back from $817 million, after the Steam realignment, would say the new unit is mostly reclassified steam work rather than nuclear growth.
Nuclear revenue $699M (2022) to $1,018M (2025); $817M in Q2 2026 on the new basis.
Whether nuclear becomes a second engine; a fall back would mean the new unit is mostly reclassified steam work.
