Fuel Cells, Engines and Batteries: The Machines That Skip the QueueNarrow moat

GE Vernova (GEV) — moat facet

GE Vernova sells its own stopgaps, aeroderivative turbines and storage, to keep impatient customers from fuel cells and engines.

The fourth kind of competitor is not a turbine maker at all. It is whatever a customer buys because a heavy turbine cannot arrive in time. The Bloom Energy page in this app makes the case from the fuel-cell side, and Caterpillar's pages count GE Vernova among the rivals for on-site power. GE Vernova's 10-K frames the same thing as growing competition from "emerging threats" as demand exceeds capacity1.

Aeroderivative orders up by almost half in 2025.

GE Vernova sells some of these substitutes itself. It took orders for 63 aeroderivative gas turbines in 2025, against 44 in 20242; these are smaller machines than the heavy-duty units. In the second quarter of 2026 aeroderivatives were 61 of the 113 gas turbine orders3. Its Power Conversion & Storage unit had revenue of $2,049 million in 20254.

That is the defence: when the heavy-duty queue is long, sell the customer the smaller machine from the same maker rather than lose them to a fuel cell or a reciprocating engine. It also brings the customer into GE Vernova's service base.

The threat grows with the queue. The longer the wait for a heavy turbine, the more customers try something else, and some of them will not come back.

The storage business has grown steadily. Power Conversion & Storage revenue, $1,549 million in 2023, was $2,049 million in 20255, and $539 million in the second quarter of 2026 on the new structure6. It gives GE Vernova a product for customers who want capacity faster than a heavy turbine can arrive.

Aeroderivative orders are the gauge. If GE Vernova's aeroderivative orders fall while the heavy-duty queue lengthens, the customers who cannot wait will be buying their stopgaps from someone else.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Aeroderivative orders 44 (2024) to 63 (2025); 61 in Q2 2026.

61 units (Q2 2026)

Whether GE Vernova keeps the customers who cannot wait; a fall while the queue lengthens would mean substitutes are winning them.
