⚠ Wind Has Lost $3.75 Billion in Five YearsHigh threat

GE Vernova (GEV) — threat to the moat

GE Vernova's Wind segment lost $3.75 billion of EBITDA in five years, more than twice what its grid business earned.

GE Vernova's Wind segment has lost money in four of the last five years. Segment EBITDA was $176 million in 20211, then minus $1,710 million in 20222, minus $1,033 million in 2023, minus $588 million in 2024 and minus $598 million in 20253. The five-year total is minus $3,753 million4. Over the same five years the Electrification segment earned a cumulative $1,721 million5.

Wind lost twice what the grid business earned.

The biggest single cause is offshore. Incremental Offshore Wind contract losses were $2,021 million from 2023 to 20256, including removing installed blades at Vineyard Wind7, and the dispute with that customer was settled only in September 20268. The 10-K warns that further execution problems could bring losses "beyond the amounts that we currently estimate"9.

Onshore has problems of its own. Orders fell from 2,290 turbines in 2023 to 854 in 202510, and the company tied the decline to US customers dealing with policy uncertainty11. Wind orders fell again in the second quarter of 202612.

The losses matter to the whole company because they sit next to a profitable gas business and absorb its gains. The adjusted EBITDA margin of 8.4% in 202513 would have been several points higher without Wind.

Even the good years in Wind were helped by one-offs. The 2024 result benefited from a gain of about $0.3 billion on the settlement of a cancelled offshore project, and 2025 revenue was lower partly because it lacked about $0.5 billion of nonrecurring settlement revenue14. Strip those out and the underlying trend is no better than the reported one.

The segment is also committed to more of the same work. Wind still had $20,388 million of backlog at June 202615, work that must be delivered whether or not it is profitable, and the 2026 guide of about a $400 million EBITDA loss16 means the company expects to keep losing money on it this year.

The first-half 2026 Wind margin, minus 19.0%17, is the number that decides this threat. The company guides a loss of about $400 million for the year18; a full-year loss above 2025's would mean Wind is still consuming what Power earns.

Whether Wind is still consuming what Power earns; a 2026 loss larger than 2025's $598M would confirm it.

How it's calculated: Wind segment EBITDA (-$657M) divided by Wind segment revenue ($3,459M) for the first half of 2026, Q2 2026 results release.
