Bank of AmericaNarrow moat
BAC — overall economic moat
Bank of America borrows from American households at less than half a percent and lends and invests the money at several times that, and almost everything else it does is built on that spread. It is a Delaware bank holding company and financial holding company1, headquartered in Charlotte, operating mainly through Bank of America, N.A. It employed about 213,000 people at the end of 20252 and serves about 69 million consumer and small business clients from about 3,600 financial centers3.
Revenue, net of interest expense, was $113,097 million in 20254. Net interest income was $60,096 million and noninterest income $53,001 million5. By segment, Consumer Banking earned $43,673 million, Global Wealth & Investment Management $24,883 million, Global Banking $24,108 million and Global Markets $24,096 million, with a loss in All Other6. The Revenue Lines page covers each.
The spread is the business model. Average deposits were about $1.98 trillion in 20257, and consumer depositors were paid 0.48% in the second quarter of 20268. Fees come from wealth management through Merrill, from investment banking and trading, and from cards and service charges; investment and brokerage services alone were $19,956 million9.
Profit was $30,509 million in 2025 and diluted earnings per share $3.8110. Return on average tangible common equity was 14.22% and the efficiency ratio 61.65%11. The bank returned about 101% of its common earnings to shareholders in 2025 through dividends and buybacks12.
It is a bank built by acquisition: NationsBank and BankAmerica merged in 1998, and FleetBoston, MBNA, Countrywide and Merrill Lynch followed13. Countrywide and Merrill Lynch were bought in 2008 and 200914, and the bank lost $2.2 billion in 201015.
In the second quarter of 2026 revenue rose 15% to $31.6 billion and earnings per share 34% to $1.2116. The shares were $56.03 on 24 September 2026, a market value of $391.80 billion17.
The balance sheet behind that revenue is very large and mostly funded by customers. Total assets were $3,411,738 million at the end of 202518, loans and leases $1,185,700 million and deposits $2,018,729 million19. Common shareholders' equity was $277,251 million20, about 8% of assets21, which is why a small return on assets becomes a respectable return on equity: return on average assets was 0.89% in 2025, and return on common equity 10.59%22.
The shares have lagged the business in 2026. At $56.03 on 24 September they were about 14% below the 52-week high of $65.232324, even though earnings per share rose 34% in the second quarter25. The dividend of $1.28 a year gave a yield of 2.28%26.
The verdict: the deposit franchise is a wide moat, and the bank built on it earns a narrow one. The number that would decide which describes the company is return on tangible common equity, 17.03% in the latest quarter27; a full year at 16% or more would mean the franchise was finally being turned into returns.
Net of interest expense, restated 2023-2025. Watch Consumer Banking, the deposit moat, at about 38% of segment revenue.
Source: Bank of America Form 10-K, FY2025 ↗Switching costs are real: a primary checking account carries the paycheque, bills and card payments, and 92% of the bank's accounts are primary by its own count. Replication is very hard, because a national deposit franchise takes decades and a charter. Network effects are modest, mostly through Zelle, which rivals share. Pricing power is middling: consumer deposits are cheap, but corporate deposits reprice with rates. Disruption resistance is moderate: stablecoins and non-bank platforms are named in the filings. Durability sits at the top of the narrow band because the deposit moat is wide but the returns on it are not.
