Fifty Million Digital Users and 3,530 BranchesNarrow moat
Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet
Fifty million Bank of America clients bank digitally and 70% of sales start there, which is why its consumer bank runs at a 51% efficiency ratio.
Bank of America's cost base is changing shape. In the second quarter of 2026 it had 50 million active digital banking users, 4.4 billion digital logins, up 7%, and 70% of total sales were digitally enabled1. Erica, the bank's virtual assistant, had 24.6 million active users, up 23%2.
The branch network is shrinking. The bank had 3,664 financial centers in June 2025 and 3,530 in June 20263, about 3.7% fewer4. At the end of 2025 it operated 14,909 ATMs5.
Payments are the stickiest digital habit. Zelle had 25.5 million active users at the bank, who sent and received 495 million transactions worth $160 billion in the quarter6. The bank moves $1.2 trillion in payments a quarter, up 5%7.
The payoff is visible in Consumer Banking, which ran at a 51% efficiency ratio in the second quarter of 20268, far below the company's 59%. Digital customers are cheaper to serve, and they still bring their paycheques.
The bank also moves a great deal of money for its customers. It handled $1.2 trillion in payments in the second quarter of 2026, up 5%9. Payments are the activity that keeps an account primary, because a customer paying bills from an account rarely moves it.
Active digital users are reported each quarter. Growth that stalled while branches kept closing would say the bank was cutting service rather than moving it.
Erica users +23%, branches 3,664 to 3,530 in a year.
Digital service replacing branch service; stalling growth while branches close would mean service was being cut.
