⚠ Forty-Two Percent Is UninsuredLow threat
Bank of America (BAC) — threat to the moat
About $858 billion of Bank of America's deposits are uninsured, which makes part of its franchise corporate money rather than household habit.
A deposit base described as a consumer franchise contains a great deal of money that is not insured. Bank of America estimated its uninsured deposits at $723.0 billion and $134.9 billion across its reporting categories at the end of 20251, about $857.9 billion, or roughly 42.5% of total deposits of $2,018,729 million23.
Most of that is corporate operating money. Global Banking's average deposits were $651.9 billion in the second quarter of 20264. Corporate treasurers move money when they worry about a bank, and they move it faster than households.
Uninsured balances are the ones that leave first when confidence in a bank breaks, because nobody guarantees them. Bank of America's deposits have grown for 12 straight quarters5, so there is no sign of such a loss of confidence, but the exposure is large.
The bank holds a large cushion against that exposure. Year-end total deposits of $2,018,729 million were matched by loans of only $1,185,700 million6, leaving most of the deposit base invested in securities and cash rather than locked in loans.
The uninsured share is disclosed each year. A rise well above 42% would make the franchise more dependent on corporate confidence; a fall would say the consumer base is doing more of the work.
