$108.6 Billion Under WaterThin moat
Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet
Bank of America's held-to-maturity securities were $108.6 billion under water in 2022, and $82 billion of that loss is still there.
In 2020 and 2021 Bank of America put a great deal of its deposit surge into long-dated securities it intended to hold to maturity. When rates rose, those securities fell in value. At the end of 2022 the held-to-maturity book had an amortised cost of $632,863 million and a fair value of $524,267 million, an unrealised loss of $108,596 million1. That was about 44% of common shareholders' equity at the time2.
The loss did not go away quickly. It was $97,994 million at the end of 20233, back to $108,165 million at the end of 20244, and $80,255 million at the end of 20255. At the end of June 2026 it was $82,094 million6, still about 30% of common equity7.
The loss is on paper because the securities will be held until they mature. Most of the book is agency mortgage-backed securities, with an amortised cost of $395,415 million and an unrealised loss of $67,309 million at the end of 20258. As long as the bank is not forced to sell, it will collect the principal in full.
What the loss represents is income foregone. The bank lent long at low rates and is paid those rates for years while its depositors are paid more. That is why the book appears in this moat: it is the cost of a decision the deposit franchise is still paying for.
The size of the loss relative to the bank changed with its capital. At the end of 2023 the loss of $97,994 million was about 37% of common equity of $263,249 million910. The fall in that ratio since has come as much from the bank's equity growing as from the loss shrinking.
The unrealised loss is published every quarter in the 10-Q. Its fall toward zero as the securities mature is the measure of the damage healing; a rise back above $100 billion would say rates had moved against the bank again.
Loss narrowed from $108.2bn (2024) to $82.1bn (June 2026) as the book runs off.
The paper cost of the 2020-21 investment decision; a return above $100bn would say rates moved against the bank again.
