ADI — overall economic moat

Investment snapshot
Wide moat↗ WideningConfidenceMediumValuationExpensive
Strongest advantageA catalogue of several thousand long-lived analog parts, many sold to hundreds of customers each, that holds adjusted gross margin near 70% and has produced positive free cash flow for 29 years
Greatest threatThe price of size: goodwill and intangibles are 73% of assets and return on invested capital has been below 9% since 2017, while a record upturn runs through distributors and China takes 25.9% of revenue
Key metricReturn on invested capital including goodwill (5.7% in FY2025) and the distributor share of revenue (58% in Q3 FY2026)
Verdict: Analog Devices owns an excellent operating franchise: parts designed in for years, a gross margin near 70% and free cash flow of almost 40% of revenue, all returned to shareholders. It bought much of that franchise, paying about $44 billion for Linear and Maxim, so the owners earn under 6% on their capital even as the business earns about 35% on its own. At 47 times trailing earnings the shares price the current upturn as lasting, though part of it is distributors refilling the shelves they emptied in fiscal 2024.

Analog Devices makes the chips that connect electronics to the physical world. It calls itself "a global semiconductor leader dedicated to solving our customers’ most complex engineering challenges"1, and its parts sense, measure, convert and power signals in factories, cars, base stations, data centres and phones. It was incorporated in Massachusetts in 19652.

Revenue quadrupled in ten years, mostly through two acquisitions.

Revenue was $11,019.7 million in fiscal 2025, which ended on 1 November, up 16.9%34. By end market it was Industrial $4,929.4 million, Automotive $3,277.9 million, Communications $1,377.9 million and Consumer $1,434.6 million5. ADI reports one segment and no profit by end market6. It sold 56% through distributors7, and China took 25.9% of revenue by buyer location8.

The business is very profitable before the cost of its acquisitions. Adjusted gross margin was 69.3% and adjusted operating margin 41.9% in fiscal 20259. Reported figures are lower because of amortisation from the Linear and Maxim purchases: operating income was $2,932.5 million, net income $2,267.3 million and diluted EPS $4.5610. Free cash flow was $4,278.6 million, 39% of revenue11, and the company has promised to return all of its free cash flow over time12.

It grew by buying. Linear cost about $15.8 billion in 201713 and Maxim about $28.0 billion of stock in 202114, and goodwill and intangibles are 72.8% of total assets15. It is buying again, Empower for about $1.5 billion16 and Alif for $1.35 billion17.

The latest quarter was a record: revenue of $4,021.9 million, up 40%, and an adjusted operating margin of 50.0%18. At $395.43 on 28 September 2026 the market value was $191.61 billion, 46.96 times trailing earnings1920.

The company is run from Wilmington, Massachusetts, by Vincent Roche, who is both chief executive and chair of the board21; in January 2026 the board grew to 11 members with the appointment of Yoky Matsuoka22. There is one class of common stock and no controlling holder, and institutions own 92.63% of the shares23. About 24,500 people work for ADI, some 13,000 of them engineers24. It makes its most specialised wafers in its own fabs in Wilmington, Camas, Beaverton and Limerick and buys more than half of its wafers from foundries such as TSMC25.

The business is cyclical in a way the catalogue does not smooth. Revenue fell 23.4% in fiscal 202426 as customers ran down inventory, and rose 40% in the third quarter of fiscal 202627 as they rebuilt it. ADI guides one quarter at a time; for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 it expects revenue of $4.3 billion, plus or minus $100 million28, which would take the year to about $15.1 billion29. A second tally of the market gives the same $191.61 billion value30, up 57.33% in a year31.

The moat is wide in the business and narrow in the returns: about 34.9% on the capital the operations use, 5.7% on all the capital shareholders paid32. What would falsify the moat is the operating return: below 25% outside a downturn would mean the catalogue itself was weakening.

Switching costs are high: an engineer who designs an ADI converter or amplifier into a product rarely changes it, and the parts have long life cycles. Pricing power shows in an adjusted gross margin near 70% held through the fiscal 2024 downturn. Replication is hard because the proprietary analog processes sit in ADI's own fabs and the catalogue took decades and two large acquisitions to assemble. Disruption resistance is moderate: state-backed rivals are growing in China, which takes 25.9% of revenue, and data-centre demand depends on the building plans of data-centre operators. Network effects are minimal. Durability sits in the wide band on the operating franchise, not on the return on the capital paid for it.
