✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat
Analog Devices (ADI) — the future bets
ADI's future bets are two small purchases, Empower and Alif, a defence-led industrial recovery and a record quarter already guided; three of the four ride the same upturn.
ADI's future bets are mostly extensions of what it already does, bought or booked rather than invented. The company guides one quarter ahead: for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, revenue of $4.3 billion and adjusted EPS of $3.861. On that guide, fiscal 2026 revenue would be about $15.1 billion2, against $11,019.7 million in fiscal 20253 and a previous peak of $12,305.5 million in 20234.
Four bets carry the outlook. Empower: Integrated Voltage Regulators is a $1.5 billion purchase aimed at data-centre power5. Alif: Physical Intelligence for $1.35 Billion is a bet that AI will run inside machines6. Test Equipment and Defence is the part of the Industrial recovery most likely to last. A $4.3 Billion Quarter, Guided is the nearest test.
The pattern is ADI's usual one. It buys specialists, as it bought Hittite, Linear and Maxim7, and sells their parts through its own engineers and distributors. The two 2026 deals are small, about $3 billion together8, and funded partly by $3.0 billion of new notes9.
The bets share one weakness. Three of the four ride the same upturn: data-centre spending, restocking and a record quarter. Only the defence and test-equipment demand in the third has a clear life beyond the cycle.
The bets are being financed as they are made. ADI issued $3.0 billion of senior notes in September 2026, due in 2029, 2031, 2033 and 203610, and in July it arranged a 364-day revolving facility of up to $3.0 billion11. It also has $7.4 billion of buyback authority left12. The deals, the buybacks and the dividend now draw on the same cash and the same borrowing capacity.
The combined wager is visible in the guide. If adjusted EPS for the fourth quarter comes in below the $3.71 bottom of the range13, the market's forward multiple of 24.84 times14 will have been set on earnings that did not arrive.
Q4 FY2026 guided to a record; Empower closed, Alif agreed.
The combined wager in one figure; a result below $3.71 would mean the forward multiple assumed too much.
