✦ Test Equipment and DefenceNarrow moat
Analog Devices (ADI) — the future bets
Test equipment and aerospace and defence are leading ADI's Industrial recovery, sub-markets where a design buys parts for years.
The part of the upturn most likely to last is inside Industrial. In fiscal 2025 the Industrial increase came from customer inventories normalising and "growth in the test equipment and aerospace and defense sub-markets"1. In the third quarter of fiscal 2026, "Within Industrial, all sub-markets grew"2, with test equipment and aerospace and defence again growing fastest3.
The numbers are large. Industrial revenue was $1,080.7 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2025 and $1,971.9 million in the third quarter of fiscal 202645, up 53% on a year earlier6. Over nine months Industrial rose 50%, to $5,269.8 million7.
These sub-markets suit ADI's catalogue. A defence programme or a piece of test equipment uses precision converters and amplifiers for many years, and its designers value performance and reliability over price. The 10-K lists defence applications such as electronic surveillance and countermeasures within its Industrial market8. Test equipment, in turn, rises when customers build new chips and new networks, which is happening now.
The difference from the rest of the upturn is duration. Restocking ends when shelves are full; a defence platform can buy parts for a decade. If the growth is mostly in these sub-markets, Industrial should hold up better than it did in fiscal 2024, when it fell 34.7%9.
The filings do not break out sub-market revenue, so the bet has to be read from the Industrial line as a whole. If Industrial revenue growth falls below 10% year on year while ADI still names test equipment and defence as the leaders, the lasting part of the upturn will have been smaller than it looked.
Industrial +53% in Q3 FY2026, all sub-markets growing.
The lasting part of the upturn; below 10% with the same leaders would say it was smaller than it looked.
