⚠ A Dividend That Outgrew EarningsLow threat

Analog Devices (ADI) — threat to the moat

ADI's dividend reached 110% of reported EPS in fiscal 2024 and 85% in 2025, affordable only because cash flow runs far ahead of reported earnings.

The dividend has grown faster than reported earnings, and in one recent year it was larger. Dividends per share were 71% of diluted EPS in fiscal 2015, 47% in 2018, 57% in 2022 and 51% in 20231. In fiscal 2024 they were 110%, and in fiscal 2025 85%2.

Above 100% of reported earnings in the downturn year.

Reported earnings understate what ADI can afford, because amortisation is not cash, so a payout above 100% of reported EPS does not mean the dividend is uncovered. Against free cash flow, dividends were $1,795.5 million of $3,122.0 million in fiscal 202434 and $1,924.4 million of $4,278.6 million in 20255.

The pressure comes from stacking promises. ADI has committed to return 100% of free cash flow over the long term6, which means the dividend and the buybacks together take everything. When free cash flow falls, as it did in fiscal 2024, the buybacks can be cut, from $2,964.0 million in fiscal 2023 to $615.6 million in 20247. The dividend, after 22 years of increases, is much harder to cut.

The risk is not an imminent cut. It is that the dividend becomes the fixed claim on cash that constrains everything else, including the capital spending and research that keep the catalogue full.

The measure that would show strain is dividends as a share of free cash flow. If it rises above 60% in a downturn year, the board will face a choice between the record and the business.
