◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In

Analog Devices (ADI) — the variant view

ADI's recovery is running through distributors, up 46% in the latest quarter, the same channel whose destocking cut revenue by 23% in fiscal 2024, and the market is pricing it all as end demand.

The market is pricing ADI's record quarter as demand. Some of it is the channel refilling, and the filings show where. Distributor revenue was $2,327.1 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, against $1,592.4 million a year earlier1, up 46.1%2 while total revenue rose 40%3. The distributor share rose from 55% to 58%4, and the company explained why: "the increase in the distributor channel is primarily due to the increase in the percentage of revenue from our Industrial end market"5.

Distributor revenue grew faster than the company.

That is the exact reverse of fiscal 2024. Then, revenue fell 23.4%6, the decline "pronounced in our Industrial end market as customers decreased their inventory balances"7, and the distributor share of revenue fell with it8. ADI records revenue when a distributor buys, not when an end customer does9, so a channel refilling its shelves shows up as ADI growth before any product is built.

Two more numbers point the same way. Receivables rose 66.4% in nine months10, from $1,436.1 million to $2,389.6 million11, more than twice as fast as quarterly revenue. And Industrial revenue over the latest twelve months reached about $6,687.1 million12, above its fiscal 2023 peak of $6,565.4 million13, a peak that was itself followed by a correction.

None of this proves the demand is false. Test equipment and aerospace and defence are genuinely growing, and data-centre revenue is new. But the market is paying 46.96 times trailing earnings14 as if the whole increase were end demand.

The last time distributors took this large a share, the correction followed. The distributor share was 63% in fiscal 2021 and 62% in 202215, as customers built stock during the shortage, and 61% in fiscal 202316; in fiscal 2024 revenue fell by nearly a quarter. The share is now 58% and rising17. ADI's own seasonal note adds a further caution: first-quarter sales have historically been lower "due to plant shutdowns at some of our customers"18, so a dip early in fiscal 2027 would be normal and would not by itself say anything; a dip that deepens through the second quarter would.

The signal to watch is the channel. If the distributor share passes 60% while receivables keep rising faster than revenue, the record quarters will be stocking the shelves for the next fiscal 2024.
