Twenty-Nine Years of Positive Free Cash FlowWide moat
Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet
ADI has had positive free cash flow for 29 straight years, 39% of revenue in fiscal 2025, because its largest expense, acquisition amortisation, costs no cash.
The proof that ADI's catalogue earns real money is a cash record with no gaps. The chief executive said in February 2026 that the company had delivered "positive free cash flow for 29 consecutive years"1. Free cash flow was $4,278.6 million in fiscal 2025, 39% of revenue2, and $4,937.5 million over the twelve months to August 20263.
The margin has held through very different years. Free cash flow was 21.9% of revenue in fiscal 2015, 35.1% in 2018, 32.9% in 2020, 31.4% in 2022, 28.9% in 2023, 33.1% in 2024 and 38.8% in 20254. The downturn year of 2024 produced a higher margin than the peak year of 2023, because capital spending fell and working capital released cash as the business shrank.
Why is cash so much higher than reported profit? Because the largest cost in the income statement, acquisition amortisation, is not a cash cost. Operating cash flow was $4,812.2 million in fiscal 20255 against net income of $2,267.3 million6. The amortisation of Linear and Maxim intangibles is added back, and capital spending is low.
This is the engine behind the dividend and the buybacks. It is also the strongest case for valuing ADI on cash rather than on reported earnings: at $191.61 billion7, the market value is 38.81 times free cash flow8, against 46.96 times reported earnings9.
A cash record is only as good as its next year. If free cash flow falls below 25% of revenue in a year when revenue grows, the gap between profit and cash will have started to close from the wrong side.
Free cash flow 38.8% of revenue in FY2025; 36% over the trailing twelve months.
The cash that funds everything returned; below $4bn in a growth year would mean profit is no longer turning into cash.
