More Than Half From FoundriesNarrow moat

Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet

ADI went from making about half its wafers to buying more than half, including from TSMC, which keeps capital spending near 5% of revenue at the cost of control.

Analog Devices has moved from making about half its own wafers to buying most of them, and the change is in the wording of its 10-K. In fiscal 2021 it said: "We currently source approximately half of our wafer requirements annually internally and the remaining from third-party" foundries1. By fiscal 2025 it said: "We currently source more than half of our wafer requirements annually from third-party wafer fabrication foundries, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and others"2.

Most wafers now come from outside.

The company calls the result a strength. Its chief executive credited the third quarter of fiscal 2026 to "innovation, deep customer collaboration, and manufacturing agility"3. The agility is real. Leading-edge digital and mixed-signal parts run on processes ADI would struggle to justify building, and a foundry spreads that cost across many customers. The specialised analog processes, where ADI's own know-how matters most, stay in its own fabs.

The model also keeps capital spending low. Capital expenditure was $533.6 million in fiscal 20254, 4.8% of revenue5, and $607.8 million over the twelve months to August 20266, against free cash flow of $4,937.5 million7. That is why ADI can return nearly all of its free cash, discussed under Cash Returned, Every Dollar.

The cost is dependence. The 10-K is frank about what reliance on outside suppliers involves: "reduced control over availability, pricing, capacity utilization, delivery schedules, manufacturing yields, costs and supply chain allocations"8. In a boom, a foundry serves whoever it chooses.

The model works as long as outside capacity is there when demand returns. If capital spending has to rise above 8% of revenue for two years to secure supply, ADI will be rebuilding the manufacturing it chose not to own.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

More than half of wafers from foundries since FY2022; capex 4.8% of revenue in FY2025.

Capital expenditure as a share of revenue, trailing twelve months
4.4% (twelve months to 1 August 2026: $607.8M of $13,881.5M), from 10.3% in FY2023

The cost of the hybrid model; above 8% for two years would mean ADI is rebuilding capacity it chose not to own.
