The Catalogue and the EngineersWide moat

Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet

ADI's moat is a catalogue of several thousand long-lived parts, each designed in by an engineer who will not change it lightly, which holds adjusted gross margin near 70%.

The core of Analog Devices is a catalogue that keeps selling. The company makes the chips that turn temperature, pressure, sound, light and current into numbers, and back again, and it sells "several thousand analog ICs, many of which can have several hundred end customers"1. It adds that "Our analog ICs typically have long product life cycles."2 A part designed into an instrument, a car or a base station can sell for a decade.

Analog Devices research and development spending ($M)637.5FY2015653.8FY2016968.1FY20171,130.3FY20191,296.1FY20211,700.5FY20221,487.9FY20241,766.0FY2025SEC XBRL R&D expense from Analog Devices Forms 10-K
Research spending nearly tripled in a decade, mostly by acquisition.

That is a moat of switching costs, built one design at a time. An engineer who has made a signal chain work does not change a converter to save a little money, because the part is cheap and failure is expensive. The evidence is in the margin: adjusted gross margin of 69.3% in fiscal 20253 and 72.5% in the latest quarter4, and reported gross margin between 57.1% and 68.3% in every year from fiscal 2015 to 2025567.

Four pages test it. Several Thousand Parts, Several Hundred Customers Each is the breadth and length of the catalogue. Thirteen Thousand Engineers is the people who build it. Sixteen Percent of Revenue on Research is what it costs to keep refilling. Gross Margin Near Seventy Percent is what customers pay.

The limits are just as clear. A catalogue protects designs, not orders, and ADI's revenue fell 23.4% in fiscal 20248 when customers ran down their inventories. It sells most of its parts through distributors, which take 56% of revenue9 and book sales before the parts reach an end customer. And its fastest growth, in data centres, depends on the capital budgets of data-centre builders, which the filings do not break out by customer.

The catalogue is broad inside each product family. In amplifiers alone, "Within this product portfolio we provide precision, instrumentation, high-speed, intermediate frequency/RF/microwave, broadband and other amplifiers"10. In sensors, "MEMS technology enables us to build extremely small sensors" that combine a mechanical structure with the analog circuits that read it11. Each family is a set of niches, and each niche is a design an engineer somewhere has chosen and will not casually replace.

The facet is wide. It would stop being so if the adjusted gross margin fell below 65% outside a downturn, the level at which the parts would be priced like commodities rather than designs.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Adjusted gross margin 69.3% in FY2025 and 72.5% in Q3 FY2026.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Reported gross margin, latest quarter
67.3% (Q3 FY2026), from 62.1% a year earlier

The margin including acquisition amortisation; below 60% outside a downturn would say pricing has weakened.
