Wide moat↗ WideningConfidenceMediumValuationFair
Strongest advantageA top-three position with 123 of the 150 largest trading clients, 23 straight years at the top of advisory, and a record $11.4bn financing business that behaves like rent
Greatest threatGlobal Banking & Markets produced 76% of revenue in Q2 2026; a quiet market would hit trading and fees at once, as it did in 2022 when earnings nearly halved
Key metricReturn on tangible equity (16.0% in 2025, 25.5% in Q2 2026) against a ~10% cost of equity and the firm's own 15-17% target
Verdict: Goldman has the strongest client franchise in investment banking and trading, has stopped losing money on consumers, and has nearly doubled its steady fee revenue since 2019. The market prices it at about 13.5 times earnings because the latest records came in a trading boom. That is fair until the firm shows it can hold returns above 12% in a weak year.

Goldman Sachs is a dealer, adviser and lender to the largest clients in finance, with a growing fund business alongside. Founded in 1869 and headquartered in New York1, it listed its shares in 19992 and is a bank holding company and financial holding company regulated by the Federal Reserve3. It had 47,400 people in more than 35 countries at the end of 20254.

A record in 2021, a slump, and nearly back to it in 2025.

Net revenues were $58,283 million in 20255. Global Banking & Markets earned $41,453 million, Asset & Wealth Management $16,679 million and Platform Solutions $151 million6. The Revenue Lines page covers each.

The firm makes money four ways. It advises on mergers and underwrites securities: investment banking fees were $9,339 million in 20257. It makes markets for clients in equities and fixed income, and lends to the funds that trade: FICC and equities together earned $31,057 million89, and financing was a record $11.4 billion of that10. It charges fees on client assets: management and other fees were $11,538 million11. And it earns a spread on loans and deposits: net interest income was $13,559 million12.

Its consumer venture is ending. Platform Solutions lost about $7.1 billion before tax from 2020 to 202413, and in December 2025 Goldman agreed to transfer the Apple Card to another issuer14.

Profit was $17,176 million in 2025 and diluted earnings per share $51.3215. Return on equity was 15.0% and return on tangible equity 16.0%16. The firm bought back $12,360 million of stock17.

In the second quarter of 2026 net revenues were a record $20,338 million and diluted earnings per share a record $20.9818. The shares closed at $935.45 on 25 September 2026, a market value of $283.22 billion19, about 13.5 times trailing net earnings20.

The first half of 2026 shows how far the mix still leans on markets. Global Banking & Markets earned $28,258 million of the $37,565 million of net revenues in the six months, against $20,874 million of $29,645 million a year earlier21. Net earnings for the half were $12,258 million and diluted earnings per share $38.51, against $25.0722. The workforce is spread wide: employees come from over 190 countries and speak more than 175 languages23.

The verdict: a wide moat in client position, reputation and scale, around revenue that still follows markets. The number that would decide how much the moat is worth is return on tangible equity in the next weak year; above 12% would mean the franchise now earns its cost of capital without a boom.

Replication is very hard: a top-three position with 123 of the 150 largest trading clients, 23 years at the top of advisory and a Federal Reserve-regulated balance sheet took decades. Network effects are real in trading, where seeing more flow improves pricing and financing, and in advisory, where the league table sells itself. Switching costs are moderate: prime brokerage and private banking are sticky, trading flow is not. Pricing power is middling; fees follow market activity. Disruption resistance is fair, with private credit competing for loans. Durability sits in the wide band on the franchise, though returns remain cyclical.
