⚠ Returns Still Below the Rest of the FirmModerate threat
Goldman Sachs (GS) — threat to the moat
Goldman's asset business still earns less on its capital than the trading floor it was meant to balance.
The segment Goldman is building to steady the firm still earns less on its capital than the segment it is meant to steady. Asset & Wealth Management's return on equity was 12.5% in 2025, against 16.4% in Global Banking & Markets1. It was 14.6% in 2024 and 4.5% in 20232.
The segment carried $24,666 million of average common equity in 20253, and its pre-tax earnings fell to $4,127 million from $4,865 million4 as investment gains shrank.
The segment's costs grew faster than its revenue in 2025. Compensation and benefits in Asset & Wealth Management were $6,116 million in 2023, $6,564 million in 2024 and $7,432 million in 20255. With revenue up only about 2% that year6, the margin fell.
The second quarter of 2026 brought the segment's return to 13.8%7, against 27.5% in Global Banking & Markets8. The gap widened in the quarter, because trading boomed faster than fees could.
The targets are high-teens returns and a margin of about 30%9. A 2026 return below 13% would mean the fee business was not yet good enough to justify the capital it uses.
