Morgan Stanley: The Rival That Chose WealthNarrow moat
Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet
Morgan Stanley took the wealth road and the market pays it more, while Goldman is trying to close the gap through private funds instead.
Morgan Stanley is the rival closest to Goldman in shape, and the one whose strategy is the clearest contrast. Both firms appear in each other's peer groups: Goldman measures its wallet share against Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, Barclays, Deutsche Bank and UBS1. The difference is what each built alongside the trading floor.
Morgan Stanley put wealth management at the centre of the firm; its own page in this app covers that business. Goldman built an asset and wealth business too, but it is a smaller share of the firm: Asset & Wealth Management was $16,679 million of Goldman's $58,283 million of net revenues in 20252, about 29%3, and about 23% in the second quarter of 20264. Global Banking & Markets was the rest, less the shrinking consumer business.
The market pays for the difference. On 25 September 2026 Morgan Stanley was worth $308.32 billion and Goldman $283.22 billion5, even though Goldman calls its equities business the leading franchise in the peer group6. The gap, about $25 billion7, is roughly what the market pays for a steadier mix.
Goldman is not trying to copy the model wholesale. Its answer is alternatives and private wealth, where fees are higher: record alternatives fundraising of $115 billion in 20258 and about $2.0 trillion of wealth client assets in June 20269.
Goldman's asset business is not small by any ordinary measure. Management and other fees were a record $3,355 million in the second quarter of 202610, and wealth management client assets were about $2.0 trillion11. The gap to Morgan Stanley is one of proportion, not of scale.
The relationship is a race between two answers to the same question. Were the asset business to pass a third of Goldman's net revenues, Goldman would have closed much of the gap by its own route; a share stuck near a quarter would say it had not.
AWM ~29% of Goldman revenue in 2025; ~23% in Q2 2026.
How far Goldman has moved toward the steadier model; a rise above a third would say it had closed much of the gap.
