Equities: $16.5 Billion and a RecordWide moat
Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet
Goldman's equities desk is now its biggest line, and the record in the latest quarter came from both trading and lending to the funds that trade.
Goldman Sachs's largest single revenue line is now its equities business, and it has been growing faster than the firm. Equities net revenues were $11,549 million in 2023, $13,432 million in 2024 and $16,535 million in 20251, a rise of about 43% in two years2. The firm describes it as the leading equities franchise on cumulative disclosed revenues since 20203.
The line has two halves that behave differently. Intermediation, the market-making and commissions earned when clients buy and sell, was $9,340 million in 2025, and financing, the prime brokerage and margin lending that funds hedge funds' positions, was $7,195 million4. By line item, market making earned $10,765 million and commissions and fees $5,029 million5.
The record kept coming. In the second quarter of 2026 equities revenue was $7,416 million, up 72% from a year earlier, with intermediation at $4,157 million and financing at $3,259 million, both records67. Equities was about 48% of the segment's revenue in that quarter8.
Why is this a moat rather than a lucky year? Equity trading at this scale needs three things at once: a balance sheet large enough to take the other side of big orders, the technology to price and hedge them, and a client list that sends the orders in the first place. Goldman has all three, and the second-quarter figures show clients concentrating their business with the dealers who do.
The first quarter of 2026 had already been strong: equities earned $5,326 million, and the second quarter added $2,090 million more910. Financing in the second quarter was $3,259 million against $1,706 million a year earlier, up 91%11. The lending half grew faster than the trading half.
The weak point is that intermediation depends on how busy markets are. Judge it against its own record. A quarter of equities revenue under $5 billion, with markets open and active, would say the share gains had been rented, not won.
Equities $11.5bn (2023) to $16.5bn (2025); $7.4bn in Q2 2026.
The size of the trading franchise; a quarter below $5bn with markets active would mean share was slipping.
