⚠ Interest Rates Carry Most of the RiskLow threat

Goldman Sachs (GS) — threat to the moat

Interest rates are the biggest single risk on Goldman's trading books, larger than equities.

The FICC desk makes Goldman sensitive to rate shocks in a way its equity business is not. Interest rates were the largest risk factor in the second quarter of 2026, at $82 million of average daily value-at-risk, against $65 million for equities, $30 million for commodities and $19 million for currencies1. Diversification took $76 million off the total2.

Rates are the largest factor.

The firm lists general economic conditions and trade policy among the things that could hurt it3. A sudden move in rates hits the market-making book and the value of the collateral behind the financing book at the same time.

The factor has been steady rather than rising. Interest-rate value-at-risk was $85 million in the first quarter of 2026 and $82 million in the second4. Currency risk rose from $15 million to $19 million over the same quarters5.

Total value-at-risk after diversification was $120 million in the quarter6. The sum of the four factors, before diversification, was $196 million7; the firm assumes they do not all move against it at once.

Value-at-risk measures ordinary days, not the worst ones. If the rate factor climbed from $82 million to above $100 million without a matching rise in FICC revenue, the desk would be taking more risk for the same money.
