◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In
Goldman Sachs (GS) — the variant view
Nearly half of Goldman's revenue is now steady fees, and the market still prices it at a trading house's multiple.
📈 GS valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →The market prices Goldman as a trading house at the top of a cycle, and that is only partly right. The shares traded at about 13.5 times trailing net earnings in September 20261, against about 15.3 times at the end of 20252. At $935.45 they were 19% below their 52-week high of $1,153.9934. The forward price-earnings ratio was 13.765.
The reasoning is visible in the results. Record trading drove the second quarter of 2026: equities up 72% and return on equity of 23.5%6. Investors have seen such quarters before, and seen them followed by 2022, when earnings nearly halved7.
What the multiple may miss is the change in the mix. Management fees plus private banking and lending, which the firm calls more durable revenues, rose from $12.2 billion in 2019 to $26.3 billion in 20258, about 45% of 2025 net revenues against about 33% in 20199. That revenue does not collapse when trading slows.
The second change is the removal of a loss. Platform Solutions lost about $7.1 billion before tax from 2020 to 202410, and it is being wound down. A firm that stops losing $1 billion to $2 billion a year in one segment has higher normal earnings than its past suggests.
Measured on the 302.77 million shares stockanalysis counts, the market value is $283.22 billion1112; on the 298.4 million basic shares Goldman reported in June 2026 it is about $279.1 billion1314. Either way the multiple is about 13.5 times trailing earnings15.
The dividend alone now pays $20.00 a share a year, a yield of 2.14% at the September price16. The 2025 payout ratio was 27.3%17, so most of the earnings still go to buybacks and growth.
The market is not blind to quality: the shares trade at 2.82 times tangible book18. But 13.5 times earnings sits between the multiples of 2023 and 2024, about 14.8 and 12.6 times19, years when return on tangible equity was 8.1% and 13.5%20. Net earnings above $15 billion in a year of falling trading revenue would show the steady half carrying the firm, and should earn a re-rating; earnings back near $11 billion would prove the market right.
