The Markets FranchiseWide moat

Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet

Goldman's trading floor is a dealer franchise with a rent roll attached, and the rent roll is growing faster than the trading.

Goldman's moat starts on the trading floor, and the floor has become more valuable, not less. Global Banking & Markets, the segment that holds trading, financing and investment banking, earned net revenues of $41,453 million and pre-tax earnings of $17,574 million in 2025, against $29,994 million and $11,000 million in 2023 on the restated basis1. Its return on equity was 16.4% in 20252.

Pre-tax earnings up 60% in two years.

Trading is most of it. FICC earned $14,522 million and equities $16,535 million in 20253. Within those, financing, the lending to hedge funds and institutions, is the half that behaves like an annuity: record financing revenue of $11.4 billion was 37% of combined trading revenue4.

The advantages are the ordinary ones of scale in a business where scale is rare. A dealer needs capital to take the other side of large trades, risk systems to hedge them, and clients who send the flow. Goldman ranked in the top three with 123 of the top 150 trading clients in the first half of 2025, against 77 in 20195. The more of a client's business a dealer sees, the better it can price the next trade and the more it can lend against the positions.

The latest quarter showed the franchise at full stretch. The segment earned $15,520 million of revenue and $7,499 million of pre-tax earnings in the second quarter of 2026, a return on equity of 27.5%67. Equities revenue rose 72%8.

The moat is wide in its client list and narrow in its revenue stability. The flow business averaged $17.6 billion a year from 2021 to 2025 without a trend9, so the growth has come from financing and from share.

The first half of 2026 shows the balance of the desk. Equities earned $12,742 million, against $8,493 million a year earlier, and FICC $8,603 million, against $7,922 million10. Equities financing alone rose to $5,867 million from $3,351 million11. The growth came from the business of lending to funds rather than from trading bonds.

The segment's second-quarter pre-tax earnings of $7,499 million compared with $4,075 million a year earlier12, a rise of about 84%13 on revenue up 53%14. Operating leverage works this way in a boom and the same way in reverse.

Segment return on equity settles the argument. It was 16.4% for 202515; a year back under 12% in a normal market would mean the gains had been borrowed from a good cycle.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Segment pre-tax earnings $11.0bn (2023) to $17.6bn (2025).
