⚠ A Balance Sheet Growing Faster Than Its EquityModerate threat

Goldman Sachs (GS) — threat to the moat

Goldman's assets grew by more than a quarter in eighteen months while its equity stood still.

The trading and financing growth has been paid for with balance sheet. Total assets were $1,675,972 million at the end of 2024, $1,809,320 million at the end of 20251 and about $2,128 billion in June 20262, a rise of about 27% in eighteen months3. Shareholders' equity was $121,996 million at the end of 2024 and about $123 billion in June 202645, almost unchanged6.

Assets up about 27% since end-2024.

The leverage ratio, assets over equity, rose from 13.7 times to 14.5 times during 20257. Buybacks explain the flat equity: the firm returned more capital than it retained.

None of this breaks a rule. The Standardized CET1 ratio of 12.9% in June 2026 still sat above the 11.4% requirement8. But the cushion shrank as the assets grew.

Much of the growth sits in trading and financing assets. At the end of June 2026 trading assets were $789 billion, collateralized agreements $366 billion and customer and other receivables $230 billion9. Unsecured long-term borrowings rose to $348 billion from $315 billion in three months10.

Common equity barely changed either: $109,819 million at the end of 2025 and $109,714 million in June 20261112. Book value per share still rose, to $367.67, because the share count fell13. Per-share growth and firm-level stagnation are the same fact seen from two sides.

Leverage at year end is where this would show. Assets above 16 times equity, with CET1 under 12%, would mean the firm had leaned on its balance sheet to produce the returns the market is paying for.
