Goldman Sachs (GS) — threat to the moat

Goldman's supervised assets grew faster than the fees it earns on them in 2025.

Goldman's asset business grew in 2025, but the fee on each dollar slipped. Assets under supervision rose from $3,137 billion to $3,606 billion1, about 15%2. Management and other fees rose from $10,415 million to $11,538 million3, about 11%4.

The fee rate slipped.

Part of the gap is mix. Liquidity products, which earn thin fees, were a large share of inflows, and passive equity grows in rising markets. Part is price: the industry has cut fees on traditional funds for years, and Goldman is not exempt.

The 2025 inflows were weighted toward low-fee money. Of $224 billion of total net inflows, $168 billion were long-term and $56 billion went into liquidity products5. Market appreciation added $245 billion6, more than the inflows did. Rising markets lift the asset total faster than they lift the average fee rate.

In the second quarter of 2026 the relationship reversed: management and other fees rose 20% from a year earlier7 while assets under supervision rose about 23%8. The gap is narrower, but assets still grew faster than fees.

The firm's strategy is to push the mix toward alternatives, where fees are higher. A second year of management fees growing more slowly than assets under supervision would mean the fee rate was falling faster than the mix could lift it.
