Asset & Wealth ManagementNarrow moat
Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet
Goldman's asset business has turned from a lumpy investor into a fee earner, and its returns are still catching up with its size.
Asset & Wealth Management earned net revenues of $16,679 million and pre-tax earnings of $4,127 million in 20251, about 29% of firm revenue2. It is the segment Goldman is growing to steady the firm.
What is inside: fund management for institutions and individuals across equity, fixed income, liquidity products and alternatives; private wealth management for rich families; private banking and lending; and, shrinking, the firm's own principal investments. In 2025 management and other fees were $11,538 million, incentive fees $489 million, private banking and lending $3,347 million and investments $1,305 million3.
It is paid mostly as a percentage of assets. Assets under supervision were a record $4,041 billion in June 20264. Alternatives earned an average effective fee of 58 basis points in the second quarter5. Private banking earns a spread on loans and deposits, including the Marcus consumer deposits now reported here6.
The history shows why the mix matters. On the old basis the segment earned $13,757 million in 2020, $21,965 million in 2021 and $13,376 million in 20227, the 2021 spike and 2022 fall driven by gains on the firm's own equity investments. On the restated basis it earned $14,202 million in 2023, $16,316 million in 2024 and $16,679 million in 20258. The two series differ in definition and should not be spliced.
Profitability is improving from a low base. The pre-tax margin was about 12% in 2023, 30% in 2024 and 25% in 20259, and return on equity 4.5%, 14.6% and 12.5%10. The 2025 figure carried about 2.3 percentage points of drag from historical investments and an FDIC fee11. The firm targets a margin of about 30% and high-teens returns12.
The second quarter of 2026 brought revenue of $4,597 million, up 20%, pre-tax earnings of $1,112 million and return on equity of 13.8%1314.
The segment's balance sheet is still large for a fee business. Asset & Wealth Management held total assets of $216 billion and loans of $53 billion at the end of June 2026, and its pre-tax margin for the first half was 24%15. In the second quarter its investments line earned $441 million, against $137 million a year earlier, on gains in private equities16. That line can still move the segment's quarter.
Equity assets grew fastest in the year to June 2026, from $857 billion to $1,123 billion, while fixed income rose from $1,237 billion to $1,394 billion17. Equity funds earn more than bond funds, so the mix moved in the segment's favour even before alternatives are counted.
The outlook rests on alternatives and wealth. Management and other fees should grow faster than assets as the mix moves toward alternatives; if segment return on equity stayed below 14% through 2027, the targets would be out of reach and the steady half would remain the lower-return half.
Pre-tax margin ~12% (2023) to ~25% (2025); target ~30%.
The profit of the fee business; a fall with markets flat would mean the margin plan was slipping.
