Global Banking & MarketsWide moat

Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet

Goldman's banking and trading segment earns seven-tenths of the revenue and a return that swings from 11% to 27%.

Global Banking & Markets is Goldman's largest segment by far: $41,453 million of net revenues and $17,574 million of pre-tax earnings in 20251, about 71% of firm revenue2. It combines investment banking, the trading desks and the financing business in one segment.

Trading is three-quarters of the segment.

What is inside: advisory on mergers, equity and debt underwriting, market making in bonds, currencies, commodities and equities, and lending to institutions through prime brokerage, repurchase agreements and structured loans. In 2025 investment banking fees were $9,339 million, FICC $14,522 million, equities $16,535 million and other $1,057 million3.

It is paid four ways. Advisory and underwriting are fees on transactions. Intermediation is the spread and commission on client trades. Financing is interest and fees on money lent. Other covers transaction banking, which moved into the segment in the restatement at the end of 20254.

The history depends on the basis. On the restated basis revenue was $29,994 million in 2023, $35,067 million in 2024 and $41,453 million in 20255. On the old basis it was $30,469 million in 2020, $36,734 million in 2021 and $32,487 million in 20226. The two series are not comparable, because the fourth-quarter 2025 restatement moved transaction banking in and other items around.

Profitability is high for a bank. The pre-tax margin was about 42% in 2025 and about 37% in 20237, and return on equity 16.4% in 2025, 13.8% in 2024 and 11.3% in 20238. The segment used $79,748 million of average common equity in 20259.

Growth came from share and financing. Revenue rose about 38% in two years10, and the second quarter of 2026 was a record: $15,520 million, up 53%, with pre-tax earnings of $7,499 million and a return on equity of 27.5%1112.

The costs of the segment follow its revenue. Compensation in Global Banking & Markets was $8,762 million in 2023, $9,640 million in 2024 and $11,025 million in 2025, and other operating expenses $9,802 million, $10,814 million and $12,476 million13. Net earnings to common were $13,117 million in 202514. Goldman puts the segment's five-year average return on equity at 16.0%15.

The firm credited 2025's rise mainly to advisory: segment revenue was 18% higher than 2024, and investment banking fees rose 21% on a significant increase in completed mergers and acquisitions16. FICC grew 9%17. The first half of 2026 then added another 35% on the half before18.

The outlook is as good as markets allow. The banking backlog was up in the second quarter, but debt underwriting backlog fell significantly19. Return on equity above 15% through a weak year would make this a wide moat on returns as well as on rankings; below 12% would show a cyclical business with a strong name.

Moat trajectory: Widening
