⚠ Financing Is Lending to Leveraged FundsModerate threat

Goldman Sachs (GS) — threat to the moat

Goldman's fastest-growing revenue is a loan book to hedge funds, secured but growing faster than the capital behind it.

The financing business grows by lending more to funds that are already borrowing. Global Banking & Markets loans were $127,697 million at the end of 2024 and $150,130 million at the end of 20251, and the presentation for the second quarter of 2026 put them at $188 billion2. The segment held $1,582,670 million of assets at the end of 20253, about 87% of the firm's total4.

Global Banking & Markets loans ($bn)127.7Dec 2024150.1Dec 2025188Jun 2026Goldman Sachs Form 10-K FY2025; Q2 2026 earnings presentation
Segment loans up about half in eighteen months.

Most of that lending is secured. The firm says about 85% of its loans are secured and its net charge-off rate was 0.6% in 20255. Collateral is the defence, and it works until prices gap faster than margin calls can be met.

The risk shows in the capital ratio rather than the loss line. The Standardized CET1 ratio fell to 12.9% in June 2026 from 14.3% at the end of 2025, on higher credit and market risk-weighted assets6.

The allowance for loan losses was 1.0% of gross loans at amortized cost at the end of 20257. In the second quarter of 2026 the firm said its provisions "primarily reflected impairments related to wholesale loans"8, a change from the consumer card losses that drove the line a year earlier.

Loans are only part of the exposure. Collateralized agreements, the repurchase and securities-borrowing side of prime brokerage, were $366 billion in June 20269, larger than the loan book. A disorderly fall in markets tests the collateral on both.

Loan growth is the gauge. Segment loans rising another 20% in a year while the CET1 ratio kept falling would mean the financing revenue was being bought with capital rather than earned from clients.
