Twenty-Three Years at the Top of AdvisoryWide moat
Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet
Goldman has topped the advisory league for 23 straight years, and the ranking is its own best sales pitch.
Goldman's name is worth most in the boardroom. By its own measure of reported net revenue share, it has been first in advisory for 23 years, from 2003 to 20251. Dealogic ranked it first in mergers and acquisitions for 20252, and first in announced and completed M&A for the first half of 20263.
The revenue has grown with the ranking. Advisory net revenues were $3,299 million in 2023, $3,534 million in 2024 and $4,726 million in 2025 on the restated basis4, a gain of about 43% in two years5. In the second quarter of 2026 advisory earned $1,378 million6.
Advice on a merger is sold on judgement and track record, and a board facing the largest decision in its history rarely wants to explain why it chose a cheaper adviser. That is why a lead in advisory lasts: the league table is itself the marketing. A company that hired Goldman on its last deal is likely to call again, and a rival bank has few ways to break in except by winning a transaction Goldman was not on.
The lead has a practical side too. Advisers who see many deals learn where buyers and prices are, and that information makes the next pitch better. Goldman counts itself a trusted adviser for more than 13,000 clients7.
The second quarter of 2026 was a step down from the first in advisory: $1,378 million against $1,494 million, though up from $1,174 million a year earlier8. The firm attributed the rise from a year earlier to higher industry-wide completed M&A volumes9.
Advisory was the fastest of the three banking fees in 2025, up from $3,534 million to $4,726 million10, about 34%11. Equity and debt underwriting together grew about 10%12. The boardroom business led the year, not the capital markets.
Advisory is still a small share of the firm: about 8% of net revenues in 202513. Its value lies in the relationships it opens for financing, underwriting and trading. Losing first place in announced M&A for a full year would say the name no longer opened the door on its own.
First in advisory revenue share every year 2003-2025.
The fee for Goldman's name in the boardroom; a year of lower advisory revenue in a rising deal market would mean the ranking had slipped.
