✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat

Goldman Sachs (GS) — the future bets

Every Goldman bet is aimed at making its revenue less dependent on its own trading floor.

Goldman's future bets all point the same way: toward steadier revenue that does not depend on a busy trading floor. The firm calls management fees and private banking and lending its more durable revenues, and they rose from $12.2 billion in 2019 to $26.3 billion in 20251, about 45% of 2025 net revenues2.

From a third to nearly half.

Four bets carry the plan. The first is alternatives, with a target of $750 billion of assets by 20303. The second is an operating model built around artificial intelligence, aimed at a 60% efficiency ratio4. The third is buying fund managers, Industry Ventures and Innovator in 20265. The fourth is Asia, where the share of revenue jumped in the second quarter of 20266.

The firm has also raised the bar for its asset business. The medium-term targets for Asset & Wealth Management moved to high-teens returns and a pre-tax margin of about 30%, from mid-teens returns and a mid-twenties margin7.

None of the bets needs the consumer business, which Goldman is leaving. The exit removes a drag: Platform Solutions lost about $7.1 billion before tax from 2020 to 20248.

The medium-term targets for the asset business run three to five years from the end of 20259. The firm also targets about 5% annual growth in long-term fee-based net inflows in wealth management10. Those are the yardsticks the four bets will be measured by.

The firm lists supportive capital markets, accelerating sponsor-led transactions and a more balanced regulatory backdrop among the drivers it expects11. All three are outside its control, which is why the bets aim at fees that do not depend on them.

One figure tests all four: long-term net inflows, $91 billion in the second quarter of 2026 including $31 billion from the Innovator purchase12. A year of organic long-term inflows under $100 billion would mean the durable-revenue plan was running on acquisitions.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Durable revenues $12.2bn (2019) to $26.3bn (2025).

Reported
Long-term net inflows, latest quarter
$91bn (Q2 2026, including $31bn from the Innovator acquisition)

The single test of the durable-revenue plan; organic inflows below $100bn a year would mean it ran on acquisitions.
