Cash Returned, Every DollarWide moat
Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet
ADI returns all its free cash flow, more than $32 billion in 22 years, a promise only a business with a real moat can afford to make.
The last facet is what ADI does with the cash its catalogue produces: it gives it back. The company says its free cash flow is something "100% of which we have committed to return to shareholders over the long term"1. It returned 96% in fiscal 2025, "including $2.2 billion of share repurchases and $1.9 billion of dividends"2, and $5,170 million over the twelve months to August 20263, about 105% of free cash flow4.
The record is long. Positive free cash flow for 29 consecutive years and higher dividends for 225; more than $32 billion returned since the programme began6. Free cash flow was $753.8 million in fiscal 2015 and $4,278.6 million in 202578.
This belongs in a discussion of the moat because it is the result of the other three facets. A catalogue with long life cycles, bought processes that need little capital and a gross margin near 70% produce cash that the business does not need to reinvest. A company without a moat could not promise to return everything; it would need the money to defend its position.
Four pages test it. Twenty-Nine Years of Positive Free Cash Flow is the cash itself. Twenty-Two Years of Dividend Increases is the fixed promise. Buybacks That Shrink the Count is the flexible one. Borrowing to Buy and Return is how the promise is being funded now.
Dividends paid went from $491.1 million in fiscal 2015 to $1,924.4 million in fiscal 20259, nearly four times10. Buybacks were larger still in the Maxim years: about $10.9 billion from fiscal 2021 to 202511. At 1 August 2026, $7.4 billion of repurchase authority remained12, so the flexible half of the promise has room to keep going if cash flow holds.
Wide, then, with a caution. Returns above 100% of free cash flow, as in fiscal 2021 to 2023 and the latest twelve months13, are paid partly from debt. The facet would weaken if returns stayed above free cash flow for three years in a row while net debt rose, because a promise funded by borrowing is a promise with an end date.
96% of free cash flow returned in FY2025; about 105% over the trailing twelve months.
Whether the return promise is paid from the business; above 100% for three years with rising debt would mean it is borrowed.
