⚠ A Loss the Capital Ratio Does Not SeeModerate threat
Bank of America (BAC) — threat to the moat
The $82 billion loss on held-to-maturity securities is invisible to Bank of America's capital ratio and nearly four times its capital headroom.
Because the securities are classified as held to maturity, their unrealised losses do not reduce Bank of America's regulatory capital. They are carried at amortised cost, and only losses on available-for-sale securities flow through other comprehensive income1. The bank's CET1 ratio was 11.2% in June 20262 with the $82 billion held-to-maturity loss outside it3.
The accounting is correct and it is also a choice made in advance. If the bank ever had to sell those securities to meet withdrawals, the loss would become real, and it would be larger than the bank's capital headroom above its minimum, about $21.5 billion in June 20264.
That scenario requires a run on a bank whose deposits have grown for 12 straight quarters5, which is not the base case. But it explains why investors look at held-to-maturity losses at all.
The supplementary leverage ratio does not see it either. That ratio was 5.7% at the end of 20256, and the regulators cut the leverage buffer from 2.0% to 0.75%7. The relaxation frees capital for a bank that still carries an $82 billion paper loss.
The gap between the loss and the capital headroom is the figure to watch. As long as the loss is several times the headroom, the deposit franchise's stability is doing the work that capital would otherwise have to do.
