Returning More Than It EarnsNarrow moat

Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet

Bank of America has retired nearly a third of its shares since 2015 and returned all of its 2025 earnings, on capital it cannot keep spending.

Bank of America has been giving back everything it earns. In 2025 it repurchased 451.9 million shares for $21,433 million1 and paid $8.1 billion of common dividends2, together about 101% of the $29,055 million of net income available to common shareholders3. In the first half of 2026 it repurchased $13.2 billion of stock and paid $4 billion in dividends4.

Nearly five times in two years.

The effect is large over time. Average diluted shares fell from 11,236.2 million in 2015 to 7,680.9 million in 20255, about 31.6%6. Buybacks were $4,576 million in 2023 and $13,104 million in 20247, rising each year.

The dividend has risen too: the bank raised the quarterly dividend 14% to $0.32 in July 20268, from $0.22 in 20229. About $17 billion of the $40 billion buyback authorisation remained at the end of June 202610.

Returning all of earnings is possible because the bank's capital ratio was above its minimum. It is running that surplus down, from 11.9% to 11.2% in eighteen months1112.

The dividend has grown faster than earnings. Dividends paid per share rose from $0.20 in 2015 to $1.08 in 202513, and the quarterly rate went from $0.22 in 2022 to $0.32 in 20261415. Even so, the dividend is the smaller part of what the bank returns.

The payout cannot stay above 100% indefinitely. The annual share of common earnings returned is the figure to follow; a fall well below 100% in 2027 would mean the rising capital minimum had caught up with the buybacks.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Buybacks $4.6bn (2023) to $21.4bn (2025); $13.2bn in H1 2026.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Common stock repurchased, first half
$13.2bn (H1 2026) vs $21.4bn in all of 2025

The pace of capital return; a sharp slowdown would mean the capital minimum had caught up.
