GE Vernova (GEV) — threat to the moat
GE Vernova trades at 46 times forward earnings, a price that assumes the turbine shortage and its margins last to 2028 and beyond.
GE Vernova's shares price the turbine shortage as permanent. At $957.63 on 25 September 2026 the company was worth $255.05 billion1. It listed on 2 April 20242; on the eve of that listing its when-issued market value was $35.71 billion3, and at the end of 2024 it was $90.60 billion4.
The headline multiple is flattered twice. Trailing earnings of $9,529 million5 include the $3,992 million gain on Prolec GE6, and 2025 earnings included a $2.9 billion tax benefit7. The trailing P/E of 27.418 therefore understates the price. The forward P/E is 45.689, and on 2025 earnings without the tax benefit the year-end multiple was about 8910. The shares trade at 21.33 times book value11.
What the price assumes is the 2028 plan: $56 billion of revenue at a 20% margin12, from 8.4% in 202513. Analysts' average target is $1,237.3414, 29% above the price15.
The shares have already shown how quickly sentiment can move. Their 52-week range runs from $530.16 to $1,195.9416, and the close on 25 September was 20% below the high17.
The enterprise value, $246.05 billion18, is below the market value because the company holds net cash. On any measure the shares are priced as a growth company: 6.17 times trailing sales19, against 2.59 times at the end of 202420. The multiple of sales has more than doubled while revenue grew 18%21.
The first-quarter report shows how fast the numbers turn. Net income of $4.7 billion in that quarter22 was almost all gains on deals; the second quarter's $668 million23 was closer to the underlying run rate. A buyer paying 27 times trailing earnings is paying for the first quarter, not the second.
The forward multiple is the number that measures this threat. At 45.6824, the price leaves no room for the queue to shorten; if orders fall while the multiple stays above 40, the shares will be pricing a shortage that has ended.
The price of the shortage; orders falling while the multiple stays above 40 would mean the shares price a shortage that has ended.
