GE Vernova (GEV) — threat to the moat
GE Vernova sold equipment below cost as recently as 2023, so its new pricing power depends on the queue lasting.
GE Vernova's equipment margin is a product of scarcity, and scarcity is being engineered away, partly by GE Vernova itself. The company plans 24 gigawatts of annual gas turbine output in 2028 and 30 gigawatts in 2030, up from 20 in 20261. Its 10-K notes that "Due to increasing demand exceeding available capacity" it faces growing competition2.
Equipment was sold below cost as recently as 20233, when demand was weaker. Nothing in the product changed between then and 2025; the balance of supply and demand did.
The mitigant is time. The better-priced orders are in a backlog that converts over years: 69% of equipment RPO within two years and 97% within five4.
The 2023 loss was not a small one. Equipment cost $18,705 million to deliver against $18,258 million of sales that year5, and in 2022 the gap was $1,153 million6. Those were years of weaker demand, and they are recent enough to show where equipment pricing can go when the queue shortens.
The test comes when output reaches 24 gigawatts. If equipment margins hold near 10% once the factories have caught up, the pricing was more than scarcity; if they fall back toward zero, the queue was the only moat.
