Offshore Developers: The Customers That Cost $2 BillionThin moat

GE Vernova (GEV) — moat facet

GE Vernova lost $2 billion on offshore wind contracts in three years and settled its Vineyard Wind dispute only in September 2026.

GE Vernova's most expensive customers have been offshore wind developers. Incremental Offshore Wind contract losses were $379 million in 2023, $1,005 million in 2024 and $637 million in 20251, $2,021 million in total2, including the cost of removing blades already installed at the Vineyard Wind project3.

Revenue halved as the big projects finished.

The relationship with Vineyard Wind broke down in public. GE Vernova threatened to terminate its $1.3 billion contract, saying it was owed $360 million4. On 16 September 2026 the two settled: GE Vernova withdrew the termination notice it had sent in February and dropped its appeal of an April injunction, on confidential terms5.

The company is also the supplier of Haliade-X turbines for Dogger Bank in the United Kingdom, where turbine installation at Dogger Bank A was completed in the first quarter of 20266. Offshore revenue fell from $1,377 million in 2024 to $652 million in 20257.

These are customers GE Vernova is now trying to finish serving rather than to keep. The 10-K warns that further execution problems could bring losses beyond its current estimates8.

The Vineyard Wind project itself is large: about $4.5 billion and 806 megawatts, according to Reuters, which also recalled the 2024 blade collapse that started the dispute9. The three years of offshore charges, $2,021 million10, exceeded a full year of Electrification EBITDA, $1,433 million in 202511.

The regulators are part of these relationships. The 10-K notes oversight of Vineyard Wind by the US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and of Dogger Bank by British authorities12. A turbine failure on an offshore project becomes a regulatory matter as well as a commercial one, which is part of why these contracts proved so costly.

The next offshore charge is the thing to watch. After three years of losses, a fourth in 2026 would show that the settlement closed a dispute without closing the cost.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Offshore revenue $1,377M (2024) to $652M (2025); $305M in Q2 2026.
