⚠ Slot Reservations Are Not OrdersModerate threat

GE Vernova (GEV) — threat to the moat

Sixty-three of GE Vernova's 116 gigawatts of gas turbine commitments are slot reservations that customers may never turn into orders.

More than half of the queue is not in the backlog. Of the 116 gigawatts, 63 are slot reservation agreements1, and those sit outside remaining performance obligations. GE Vernova's own risk factor is plain: "some counterparties to slot reservation agreements may not place orders equal to the value of their reservation amount or at all"2.

More than half of the queue is reservations.

The distinction matters because the factory is being expanded against the combined number. The company plans 24 gigawatts of annual output in 2028 and 30 in 20303, and that capacity will cost money whether or not the reservations convert.

So far they have converted. The backlog rose from 33 gigawatts at the end of September 2025 to 53 by June 202645, largely from slot holders placing firm orders.

The same risk factor adds that GE Vernova's capacity expansions and related commitments may outpace realized demand6. The two warnings are linked: the factory is being sized partly on reservations, and a reservation that lapses leaves capacity with no order to fill it.

The conversion rate will decide it. If the slot figure keeps rising while firm backlog stalls, the queue will be made of options rather than orders.
