The Customers Who Are Highly LeveragedThin moat
Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet
Oracle warns that some of its customers are highly leveraged, and its protection is making them pay for the equipment up front.
Oracle's annual report contains a warning about its customers that few software companies have needed to write. It says "some of our customers may be highly leveraged"1, and that the returns on its data center investments depend on customer demand and "the ability of our key customers to meet their contractual obligations"2.
The reason is the kind of customer the AI build attracts. Companies training large models spend heavily on computing ahead of revenue, and some fund that spending with borrowed money or with investors' capital. A multi-year commitment from such a customer is only as good as its future funding.
Oracle has built protections into its contracts. In some large AI contracts the customer prepays for the equipment or supplies its own GPUs, portions that totalled $75 billion by June 20263. Customer prepayments with a significant financing component were $11,363 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 alone4.
There are also early signs worth watching in ordinary working capital. Trade receivables increased by $1,009 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, against $245 million a year earlier5, and by $2,190 million across fiscal 20266. Receivables rising faster than revenue can mean customers paying more slowly.
Oracle's own balance sheet sits on the other side of this risk. Deferred revenues were $14,686 million at 31 August 20267, much of it money customers have paid in advance. A customer that prepays has less room to walk away, and Oracle has used that structure deliberately; it is the clearest sign that Oracle knows which customers need watching.
The protections are real but partial. The warning would be receivables growing much faster than revenue for several quarters, or a disclosed dispute with a large customer; either would say a leveraged buyer is struggling to pay.
Concentration among large AI buyers rising; prepayments partly offset it.
Customers paying more slowly shows up here first; sustained growth well ahead of revenue would be a warning.
