Oracle (ORCL) — threat to the moat
Oracle spent more on capital equipment than it earned in revenue in the latest quarter, which is the cost structure of a utility, not a software company.
In fiscal 2024 Oracle spent $6,866 million on capital expenditures, about 13% of revenue12. In fiscal 2026 it spent $55,663 million, about 83%3. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027 it spent $28,499 million on revenue of $19,345 million4, about 147%5.
That is not the cost structure of a software company; it looks more like a utility's or a telephone network's. The difference is that a utility's customers are many and regulated, while Oracle's new capacity is committed to a small number of very large buyers.
The spending builds real assets. Property, plant and equipment reached $127,845 million in August 20266. But equipment such as GPUs wears out and becomes obsolete much faster than a power station, and depreciation already rose to $3,156 million in the quarter7.
The spending has grown in almost every year since fiscal 2021. Capital expenditures were $2,135 million in fiscal 2021, $4,511 million in fiscal 2022, $8,695 million in fiscal 2023 and $6,866 million in fiscal 20248, before $21,215 million and $55,663 million in the next two years9.
The ratio will only fall if revenue catches up. Consensus has fiscal 2027 revenue at about $90.5 billion10; S&P estimated capex of $90 billion to $95 billion11. If capex stays above revenue for a full year, Oracle will have become a construction company that owns a software business, and its returns should be judged that way.
