Oracle (ORCL) — threat to the moat

A reported 14% margin on rented Nvidia chips against Oracle's own 30% to 40% is the gap on which the AI cloud's value depends.

The most uncomfortable number about Oracle's AI business came from outside the company. In October 2025 CNBC reported that The Information had found Oracle earned a 14% gross margin on renting out Nvidia AI chips in the August quarter1. Oracle's own figure, given the same month, was an adjusted gross margin of 30% to 40% for AI infrastructure after land, datacenter, power and computing equipment costs2.

AI infrastructure gross margin: report against Oracle range (%)14%Reported, August 2025 quarter30%Oracle range, low40%Oracle range, highCNBC, 16 October 2025, citing The Information and Oracle
Every version sits below the old business.

The two numbers need not contradict each other. A new cluster earns little while it ramps up and more once it is full; the reported 14% was one quarter, and Oracle's range describes the business over the life of a contract. Either way, both are well below the roughly 59% the cloud and software segment earned in fiscal 20263.

The risk is that the lower figure is closer to the lasting one. Computing capacity is the same product whoever rents it out, and Oracle's customers can compare its prices with other clouds.

The filings will settle it over time. If the segment margin, 54.5% in the latest quarter4, keeps falling by several points a year as OCI grows, the reported 14% will look more like the truth than Oracle's 30% to 40%.
