SAP, Salesforce and Workday: The Application RivalsNarrow moat
Oracle (ORCL) — moat facet
Oracle fights SAP, Salesforce and Workday for the same finance and HR budgets, and its ten percent growth says it is holding its ground, not taking theirs.
In applications Oracle has old-fashioned competitors: companies selling the same kind of software to the same buyer. Its annual report names SAP, Salesforce and Workday among them1. The prize is the finance, human-resources and customer systems that large companies run on.
Oracle's own figures describe its position. Cloud applications revenue was $15,888 million in fiscal 2026, up about 11.3%23, and $4,219 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 10%4. Oracle says that cloud applications contributed 16% of its cloud revenue growth in fiscal 2026 and cloud infrastructure 84%5.
This contest is slow. A company chooses a finance or payroll system perhaps once a decade, and Oracle's advantage is that many of its application customers also run its database, so a switch away means two projects. SAP's customers face the same problem in reverse.
Oracle is betting that artificial intelligence changes the economics. Its co-chief executive said in March 2026 that AI code generation was making its SaaS application suites "more competitive and more profitable"6. The growth rate has not yet moved: it was about 10% before that remark and about 10% after.
The workforce behind the contest is smaller than it was. Oracle cut about 21,000 jobs in fiscal 202678 and says AI code generation lets it build more SaaS applications for more industries at a lower cost9. If that is true, Oracle can offer more industry suites than rivals with the same budget; the proof would be a rising applications growth rate.
Nothing in the filings suggests Oracle is losing this contest, and nothing suggests it is winning decisively. The figure to follow is trailing cloud applications revenue, about $16.3 billion10; growth that climbs into the mid-teens would mean the AI claims are real, and growth below 8% would mean rivals are taking the new customers.
Cloud applications growing about 10%.
Oracle in the head-on applications contest; growth below 8% would mean rivals are taking new customers.
